Tras haber protagonizado su primera película con Robert Bresson, después de tres encuentros fortuitos e infructuosos con Jean-Luc Godard, un día de junio de 1966 Anne Wiazemsky le escribió una breve carta en la que le decía que le había gustado mucho su última película, Masculino Femenino, y le decía también que amaba al hombre que se hallaba detrás de aquello, que lo amaba a él.
Y, pocos días más tarde, Godard visita a la jovencita de diecinueve años en Montfrin, donde Anne pasa sus vacaciones en una hermosa villa junto a su amiga Nathalie. Es el inicio de un apasionado romance. Pero el verano llega a su fin. Y para Anne comienzan tiempos difíciles y excitantes: ¿cómo conciliar su intenso deseo por ese hombre singular, diecisiete años mayor que ella, con las exigencias de una familia autoritaria liderada por su abuelo, el muy católico escritor François Mauriac, que repudia la relación entre el cineasta y la joven? Porque éste es un relato de descubrimientos y de iniciación al sexo, al amor y a la vida adulta, pero también un peculiar, sugestivo fresco de la Francia intelectual antes del estallido del mayo del 68. En la novela, junto al retrato de un Jean-Luc Godard ya en camino de convertirse en el gran reinventor del cine, encontramos a los cineastas François Truffaut o Jacques Rivette, a filósofos como Françis Jeanson, al crítico de cine Michel Cournot, determinante en la carrera de actriz de Wiazemsky, que se debate entre la interpretación y sus estudios de filosofía en Nanterre. De la mano de la pareja protagonista, viajamos al corazón de un París en plena ebullición política o asistimos al rodaje de La Chinoise, al ritmo trepidante de una prosa veloz como el descapotable que conduce Godard, fresca y apasionada como la juventud que palpita en estas páginas.
